London Scout Visits Washington to Give Youth Perspective on Global Conflict

Rosie Reynolds, a 17-year old Scout from Eltham has been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference, in the United States, she left on June 22 for 10 days. Rosie, a member of Dartford Grammar School's debating team, has been chosen as one of the outstanding scholars from around the world to participate in the Global Young Leaders' conference taking place in
Washington DC and New York City for two weeks in mid June. This unique conference allows students to study and help to resolve global conflict. They will interact with key leaders and newsmakers and will deal with issues such as foreign aid, global warming, and cooperative efforts in space, terrorism and human rights. Rosie who at 17 will be eligible to vote for the first time at the next election, was nominated by her teachers at her school, due to her excellent communication skills.

Rosie has developed her debating skills over the last few years. Last year Rosie was invited to chair a debate at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Her school debating team took her to a variety of different venues which included the Palace of Westminster. It was during these series of debates that Rosie was noticed as having exceptional communications skills.

Last summer, Rosie also had the opportunity to practice her communication skills at the World Scout Jamboree, held in Essex, where Rosie played a key part in welcoming over 40,000 Scouts from around the world to celebrate Scouting’s Centenary, and talking to the media about her experiences.

Rosie said: "I am really looking forward to this huge adventure. It's going to be exciting and scary at the same time. The experience will broaden my knowledge of worldwide politics, and help me towards my Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award. The skills that I’ve developed through my
school debating team and the experiences I’ve had with Scouting have enabled me to take advantage of such an exciting opportunity - I can’t wait to go and represent UK's youth to the rest of the world!”
