What London Scouts said about Scouting and London Life
Last weekend's "Regenerate" event included lively discussions by Network and Explorer Scouts on a number of topics.
A fuller report is being prepared for the autumn, but our intrepid reporter managed to get a sneak preview of what was said
Eight topics were discussed, across the twin themes of "Future of Scouting" and "Life in London"
Is Scouting a co-educational youth movement ?
- Yes, but some barriers remain from old-school Scouters and media coverage of "Boy Scouts"
- Example Action: Recruit both girls and boys into Scouting directly from schools
How can Scouting improve its image ?
- Old images persist of kids in uniform sitting round tying knots and of old scoutmasters
- Example Action: Focus on modern aspects of Scouting, such as international, across all age ranges
How can we give young adults a greater voice in Scouting ?
- Through events like Regenerate!
- Example Action: Scout Networks should be able to elect their rep on the County Executive
Are the needs of the 18-25 age-group in Scouting being met ?
- Yes in general - Scouting offers a meeting place, flexibility, and something for the CV
- Example Action: Hold Regional and National Scout Network events
How can Scouting help to improve cohesion in the community ?
- By bringing together people from different backgrounds, upbringings and religions
- Example Action: Promote both faith-based Scout Groups and mixed Scouting activities
How to deal with teenage crime ?
- Often caused by boredom - but teenagers know right from wrong
- Example Action: Education or travelling theatre on why you shouldn't carry knives
Should 16 year olds be able to vote in parliamentary elections?
- The group was split down the middle on this topic!
- Example Action: Create Youth Parliaments to introduce young people to responsible voting
What challenges are you most concerned about over the next 10 years?
- Job/Career and Mortgages
- Example Action: Better education on these topics for young people
